Health and Safety

At Hamworthy we believe everyone has a responsibility to eliminate injuries by continually seeking safer workplaces, processes and behaviour.

We promote a company culture where safety comes first and where no business activity can jeopardise the health or safety of personnel. Activities to ensure that we provide a safe and healthy working environment are placed within the framework of an accredited OHSAS 18001 health and safety standard at each of our business unit sites.

We seek to improve safety in our businesses through training, risk assessment of processes and equipment and the active monitoring of all accidents and other incidents that posed a safety risk but did not cause injury. Whenever possible, we seek to remove at source, or reduce by other means, any significant risk of injury.

Measurement & Targets

At the end of the year ending March 2009 the incident rate of injuries within the Group that resulted in more than three days employee absence was 1,128 per 100,000. The severity of the injuries sustained is indicated by the total number of employee days lost due to injury. In the same year, the total days lost in the Group due to injury was 264 days representing 0.23 days per employee.

Whilst these results compare favourably with national averages for the industry, we remain committed to eliminating injuries completely. In the meantime, we have set ourselves a more immediate goal of ensuring that we reduce the incident rate for injuries and the number of days lost due to injury to ‘best in class’ levels for manufacturing industry.
